School Overview
To Our Current and Prospective Families:
The Intensive Learning Center (ILC) is located in the city of Lakewood, serving the students of the Bellflower Unified School District. The school facilities include an administration building, 29 general education classrooms, instructional specialists, two intervention teachers, special educational specialists, a multipurpose room, a library, and a playground. Furthermore, ILC has a world-class Spanish dual language immersion program where participating students become bilingual and biliterate, and develop cross-cultural competencies. New to the 2025-2026 school year is the Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program, which is designed to build college and career readiness in all students through increased rigor, organizational skills, and an atmosphere that is intentionally developed and nurture an environment where all students have a deep sense of belonging.
ILC reflects an excellent learning environment for all of our approximately 615 students. The daily attendance rate at the school is 97.51 percent. Student enrollment reflects the diversity of the cities of Lakewood and Bellflower, which includes a variety of ethnic backgrounds: Asian two percent, Filipino four percent, Latino 67 percent, African-American 14 percent, White six percent.
ILC's principal serves to support all students, families, teachers, and staff, while at the same time providing daily instructional leadership. Other certificated personnel serving the school include an assistant principal, counselor, physical education teacher, school psychologist, music teacher, and a speech and language specialist. All certificated staff meet the credential requirements of the State of California and a significant number hold advanced degrees. Additionally, all certificated staff have pursued course work beyond their bachelor’s degree. Teachers work in collaborative grade level teams to provide excellent instruction for all students.
ILC's staff is guided by a shared commitment to educate all of its students to attain high levels of academic achievement. We hold the vision of developing within each student feelings of self-worth and a respect for cultural diversity and interdependence. As a staff, we recognize our own responsibility and emphasize each student’s personal and social responsibility towards the school and community.
In addition, our physical learning environment and school climate is student-centered, safe and orderly, and fosters attitudes and behaviors that are respectful and supportive. Postive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) guide students in making positive choices and behaving respectfully, while also actively participating in class instruction. All students who attend ILC are expected to abide by a strict uniform dress code.
Our staff acknowledges that a home-school connection is essential to our student’s success. Parents, caregivers, and community members are actively involved in a broad range of activities, and our well-organized, talented, and dedicated PTA is very active.
We are the ILC Eagles! Watch us SOAR!
