AVID

At the Intensive Learning Center (ILC), we believe that every student possesses the potential to achieve high levels of academic success. Through our schoolwide AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) program, we embed college and career readiness strategies into daily instruction across all grade levels.

AVID is designed to nurture a growth mindset, cultivate strong organizational skills, and provide students with the academic habits they need to thrive—not just in elementary school, but throughout middle school, high school, and beyond.

What AVID Looks Like at ILC

AVID Elementary is not an elective—it is part of our everyday culture and curriculum for all TK–6th grade students:

  • Focused Note-Taking (FNT): Students learn how to take, organize, and review notes effectively, laying the groundwork for future academic success.

  • Organizational Tools: Every student utilizes grade-appropriate organizational tools, including daily planners and structured binder/folder systems to build responsibility.

  • Student Success Skills: Lessons integrate goal-setting, self-advocacy, time management, and active listening skills.

  • College & Career Culture: We celebrate a culture of higher education and future pathways! Classrooms explore colleges and careers, display university banners, and host monthly College Spirit Days.

How Families Can Support AVID at Home

Parents and caregivers are essential partners in our students' educational journeys! Here is how you can support AVID practices at home:

  1. Review the Planner Daily: Check your child’s agenda/planner every evening to stay informed about homework, upcoming projects, and school events.

  2. Help Maintain Binders/Folders: Encourage your child to clean out loose papers weekly and keep their materials organized in their designated binder or folder.

  3. Ask Open-Ended Questions: Instead of asking "How was school?", try asking "What questions did you ask today?" or "What was something new you collaborated on?"

  4. Talk About the Future: Discuss different careers, passions, and educational opportunities with your child to build excitement about learning.
